MARCH FOR LIFE

On Friday, January 25, 2020, the Rockville Women’s Center gathered a small group of staff, board members, volunteers and students to join thousands of pro-lifers at the annual March for Life in Washington, DC. This annual March promotes the beauty and dignity of every human life by working to end abortion – uniting, educating, and mobilizing pro-life people in the public square. As a testimony and representation of RWC, we were able to encourage one another and be a presence in the March.

We walked up Constitution Avenue lovingly and peacefully praying as we ended the March at the Supreme Court steps. What an honor and privilege it is to live in a country where we are free to take a stance publicly. We joined a reported 250,000 persons walking with signs, praying, singing, chanting – all for the purpose of showing our nation what it means to be pro-life and pro-woman.

Historically, the March for Life was founded by Nellie Gray and other pro-life advocates to remember and show opposition to the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case, which legalized abortion in all 50 states. The first March was held on January 22,1974, the one year anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Now, the March is held on the Friday closest to this somber anniversary in respect for the 60 million lives lost since Roe vs. Wade and in unity of the national pro-life movement.

March for Life is the largest pro-life event in the world. It is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand.

As staff, board members, volunteers, and students, we are grateful and humbled by this unique experience to have joined in the March for Life and ask you to remember to continue to pray for all of those involved in this ongoing cause for life. We invite you to stand in the gap and be the hands, arms, feet, and heart of the love of Jesus as we embrace vulnerable women and babies who may not have the voice or the strength to fight for life on their own.

Isabelle is a 28-year-old college student with a three-year-old daughter who lives out of state with her parents. Isabelle is pursuing a bachelor’s degree with plans to go to medical school. She and her boyfriend live together, an arrangement that has taken a huge toll on her and her family. Her parents told her that they would not support her having another baby if she became pregnant. Even her sister told her that she would not support her decision to have another child and would never speak to her again. Losing her family’s support was a big concern, no wonder she was so upset about her unexpected pregnancy.

The conversation with Isabelle was difficult. With so many factors to consider, she was conflicted – school, family, Christian faith. But, she had made up her mind to abort because she “knew” this would be the easiest solution. Isabelle entered the sonogram room with great hesitation and laid on the table quietly with her eyes closed. Eventually, the sound of the heartbeat caused her to look at the screen and her facial expression immediately changed from scared to excited. She stared at the screen for a few seconds and began to ask questions about the size and heartbeat of her baby. Tears rolled down her face as she spoke to the Patient Advocate, “Can I change my mind about wanting to abort? I want to parent. I want to have my baby.”

Seeing her baby’s heartbeat on the screen made all the difference in her final decision. She was sure of what she wanted to do with her pregnancy. Isabelle asked for a picture of the sonogram and made a follow up appointment. She said that she would bring the father of the baby with her. In her closing conversation, Isabelle told the Advocate, she was so happy she had come to us. She felt much better as she left than she did when she first walked into the Center.

Hope happened.
